St. Louis Cardinals 2012 Season Preview

St. Louis Cardinals 2012 Season Preview

The St. Louis Cardinals were an unlikely World Series champ in 2012. Going into September they were pretty much planning their winter vacation. Then the Atlanta Braves forgot how to win games and let the Cardinals claim the wild card playoff spot on the last day of the season. The Cardinals then surprised everyone and, in dramatic fashion, beat the Texas Rangers to win the World Series. They’ll be defending their title without their longtime skipper, Tony LaRussa who retired after last season and without all-star Albert Pujols who left as a free agent.

Miami Marlins 2012 Season Preview

Miami Marlins 2012 Season Preview

The Miami Marlins have lots of ‘new’ things surrounding their organization. They have a new name (no longer called Florida), a new logo, a new stadium with a retractable roof for those bad weather summer days, a new manager in Ozzie Guillen and a host of new players. All this infusion of new-ness makes the Marlins one of the must see teams heading into 2012. With the solid group of players they already had and the new talent they have added, the Marlins could be the team to beat in the National League this year.

Atlanta Braves 2012 Season Preview

Atlanta Braves 2012 Season Preview

The Atlanta Braves have to erase the bad memory of missing out on the 2011 playoffs due to their epic collapse last September and losing the last game of the season to seal the deal. They have basically the same team back in place having made not major moves to change their lineup or pitching staff. Given the fact that the Washington Nationals and Miami Marlins made some major improvements to their teams, the Braves could have a tough time finishing near the top of their own division and could miss out on the playoffs for a second consecutive year.

New York Mets 2012 Season Preview

New York Mets 2012 Season Preview

The New York Mets were a little better than expected in 2011 but heading into 2012 there is nothing real positive to look forward to for their fans. The team doesn’t have any real good pitching, the offense is average at best, they’ve lost some key players to free agency and the management is in turmoil due to the ongoing lawsuit against the owners. Also, they play in the very tough National League East division and, try as they might, their hopes of finishing anywhere but the bottom of the division appear slim.

Philadelphia Phillies 2012 Season Preview

Philadelphia Phillies 2012 Season Preview

The Philadelphia Phillies were expected to win the World Series in 2011. A funny thing happened on the way to the championship. They lost to eventual World Series winner St. Louis Cardinals in the playoffs. They’re back again in 2012 with a team that is one of the best in the league and boasts probably the top three pitchers in any rotation. The core group of talent that this team has should be enough for them to remain near, or at, the top of the National League East division and make another run at a World Series title.

Milwaukee Brewers 2012 Season Preview

Milwaukee Brewers 2012 Season Preview

The Milwaukee Brewers will head into the 2012 season without Prince Fielder who left the team as a free agent. They also have to deal with the mess that was caused when Ryan Braun reportedly failed a drug test. That was proven to not be the case and Braun will be with the team as they start the year rather than having to sit out 50 games for a suspension. Still, the Brewers are loaded both on offense and in the pitching staff and should be one of the league’s better teams and should find themselves back in the post season come the end of September.

Chicago Cubs 2012 Season Preview

Chicago Cubs 2012 Season Preview

The Chicago Cubs had a disappointing season in 2011 (don't all Cubs seasons seem like a disappointment). Well, the owners have brought in Theo Epstein to hopefully change all that. He was able to bring two world championships to the Boston Red Sox and will be charged with finally getting the Cubs back to a World Series. However, it probably won't be this year. They have a few decent parts but not enough to compete in the tough National League Central. At best they'll finish around .500 and in the middle of the division.

Washington Nationals 2012 Season Preview

Washington Nationals 2012 Season Preview

The Washington Nationals were an improved team in 2011 and, despite losing some key players to injury had a pretty good year. Now, with those injured players returning to the lineup, plus with the addition of a few key pitchers, they Nats could be one of the real surprise teams in the league this year. It won’t be easy playing in the National League East division where the competition is tough (except for the New York Mets) but if things fall right for the Nationals they could be competing for a playoff spot come September.

Houston Astros 2012 Season Preview

Houston Astros 2012 Season Preview

The Houston Astros were pretty bad in 2011 and don’t appear to be much better heading into 2012. Also this will be their last year in the National League before they move over to the American League in 2013. There are not many recognizable names when you look up and down the Astros roster and, although they’ll give it a good try, they should be a good bet to finish last in the National League Central division.

Pittsburgh Pirates 2012 Season Preview

Pittsburgh Pirates 2012 Season Preview

The Pittsburgh Pirates were one of the nice surprises of the 2011 season as they competed well beyond anyone’s expectations and actually were in the playoff picture for a while. Eventually, as the season wore on they faded a bit but still performed better than expected. Heading into 2012 they should continue their improved play and be a competitive team but may have trouble making any real impact with a few really good teams ahead of them in the National League Central division.
